CHATTANOOGA, TN (March 26, 2009) –Scholarships bearing the Decosimo name were recently established in the College of Business at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) to reward outstanding accounting students.
The children of Rachel and Joe Decosimo recently established two Decosimo Family Scholarship awards, in addition to the Decosimo & Company Accounting Excellence Scholarship that is funded by the principals at the regional accounting and business advisory firm Joseph Decosimo and Company, PLLC.
"The Decosimo family wanted first to honor our parents. Second, we wanted to provide an opportunity for bright young students to have a career in accounting. We find it very rewarding to give hardworking students the same educational foundation that our parents afforded us," said Fred Decosimo, principal with Joseph Decosimo and Company, PLLC.
“The Decosimo & Company Accounting Excellence Scholarship is an opportunity to recognize what the community in general, and UTC in particular, have meant to the firm over the years,” said Nick Decosimo, managing principal of Joseph Decosimo and Company, PLLC.
The first annual Decosimo Family Scholarship awards went to two Accounting and Finance juniors: Matthew Bennett and Erin Murdoch. Accounting and Finance major Samantha Cox, also a junior, received this year’s Decosimo & Company Accounting Excellence Scholarship.
Each of the scholarships will be presented annually during the Beta Alpha Psi awards dinner to deserving accounting students at the undergraduate or graduate level who exhibit leadership ability, specific technical skills and who are members of the accounting honors society Beta Alpha Psi.
Members of Beta Alpha Psi must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA and be active participants in the local community, as well as their university. Members are required to tutor accounting students, attend professional meetings, participate in community service projects, and make contributions to the national chapter's regional activities.
